Strait of Hormuz: Iran links opening to seven conditions
October 4, 2026
According to the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will only reopen it when seven prerequisites are met by the United States. This was made clear by Parliament President Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also the lead negotiator for Iran.
The time of waiting and dictating unilateral demands has expired, he is quoted by the Iranian state news agency IRNA. "The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and unambiguous," Ghalibaf said to IRNA. "The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions are met based on the declaration of intent from Islamabad." This interim agreement was concluded in June.
A corresponding list of demands is reportedly on its way to Washington. According to its own statement, the leadership in Tehran transmitted their list to the mediator Qatar to the US government.
Iran's list of demands
According to reports, Iran demands, among other things, that the United States end the naval blockade against Iranian ports and ships. Furthermore, the government of Donald Trump should lift the ban on oil exports, release frozen Iranian assets, and lift all sanctions against Iran.
The regime in Tehran also demands an end to all military actions against Iran and its allies in the region, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. It is considered unlikely that the US government will meet all the maximal demands in advance.
The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi proposed a seven-day plan. According to this, the US should fulfill all prerequisites before Iran reopens the strait in seven days and enters into negotiations for a comprehensive agreement.
Warning from Foreign Minister Araghtschi
Araghtschi told foreign diplomats in Tehran on Sunday that his country hopes the US government will choose the path of diplomacy. However, he warned that Iran is prepared for a renewed military action by the US. "If they resort to military options again, we are better prepared than before and will take all necessary measures to defend ourselves," said Araghtschi.
On Thursday, insiders from the Reuters news agency reported that Iran is planning a more comprehensive and energetic response should the US launch large-scale military attacks again.
The Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman is only 35 to 40 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean. In the Iran-US war, the strait has become the central point of conflict between Iran and the US.
Iran has largely blocked shipping traffic there since the beginning of the war. The US military has also prevented civilian Iranian ships from passing through the strait.
