β Turn around or prepare to be boarded. If you do not follow this blockade we will use violence. The entire American fleet is ready to ensure that this order is followed.
The warning was sent through crackling radio static on April 13th of this year. It was sent to ships in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, according to the Wall Street Journal.
At 4:00 PM that day, the USA began its blockade against Iranian ports in the area, in order to force Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump warned that ships attempting to pass the blockade or come near it would be "eliminated immediately." The approach resembled that used in the attacks on drug boats in the Caribbean.
"It is fast and brutal," Trump wrote on social media.
Iran saw red. The blockade was called illegal and the attacks were directed at commercial ships. The Sepah Navy, a special operations unit belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, also sent its own messages to ships in the conflict zone.
β Listen to all ships in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. This is the Sepah Navy calling on channel 16. The Strait of Hormuz is still closed. We will open it by order of our leader Imam Khamenei, not after social media posts from some idiots, heard in one of the Wall Street Journal audio recordings.
The newspaper has obtained a dozen audio files that can be linked to both Iranian and American threats and attacks. There are also audio files that seem to describe how the US fleet helped evacuate crews from ships in distress.
One of the audio files has been linked to the attack on the Iranian-flagged oil tanker Hasna in early May. The tanker, which was not loaded with crude oil at the time, was guarded by the giant American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln when it tried to sail through the US blockade.
Before the attack, several warnings were sent to the crew of Hasna, according to a statement from the US central command.
β Again, I am preparing to open fire at your stern. Leave the place now. This is a lawful action and we have on several occasions requested that you follow our demand. Your refusal forces us to use violence. Open the stern, it is heard in the call, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The shooting struck Hasna's rudder and the oil tanker was forced to send an emergency call, revealing its position in the Oman Sea.
"Hasna is no longer on its way to Iran," the US central command wrote in its statement.
