Artistic Director, Theme Announced for Fifth Thailand Biennale

Emily Chin-Jie Lee, Gesyada Siregar, and Tyuki Imamura will serve as curators of the event, to take place December 2027 to April 2028 in Rayong, on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand. jiradej-pornpilai meemalai: BAAN NOORG is the team behind the the artist-run collective Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts & Culture, founded in 2011 and operating out of Thailand’s Ratchaburi province. Baan Noorg, whose name means “countryside,” participated in Documenta 15 in 2022 and in the Fourth Thailand Biennale, held in Chiang Rai in 2022. The collective has historically organized its own biennials. Titled “Sin-Samudr, Turning Currents,” the exhibition will investigate the relationship between the local and the global, considering it as one that is evolving and closely intertwined. The biennial’s theme and its location reflect the government’s efforts to transform Rayong from an industrial city into an arts hub. Known primarily as a fishing center and a major producer of fish sauce, as well as the home of chemical and automotive plants, the city is part of Thailand’s so-called Eastern Economic Corridor, a zone established in 2017 by the country’s National Council for Peace and Order with the aim of promoting economic integration in the region.
