Soybean aphids in pockets across Midwest
Spotty soybean aphid pressure has been reported in parts of the Midwest this month.
Iowa State University Extension entomologist Erin Hodgson tells Brownfield.
“This is a pest that’s highly variable. We have pockets in Minnesota, Iowa, and even some of the surrounding states where aphids are starting to build up.”
She says high heat through mid-August helped temper populations.
“But even in some of my research plots they are holding steady and being a little bit nicer, they’ve really started to take off. Which is concerning.”
University of Minnesota Extension integrated pest management specialist Anthony Hanson says while recent cooler temperatures increase the potential for populations to increase quickly, aphids should be moving out of soybean fields to buckthorn soon.
