MSPAlliance updates certification standard to include AI and third

The latest version of the Unified Certification Standard for Cloud and Managed Service Providers now includes requirements for AI-enabled services, privileged identities, and third-party providers. The update, UCS 4.0, also strengthens existing requirements for identity management, access controls, external service providers, and executive accountability, according to a recent report by Smarter MSP. UCS 4.0 mandates that providers of cloud, SaaS, managed, and AI-enabled services undergo evaluation and approval before deployment, with designated personnel conducting regular reviews. New requirements focus on robust identity and access management frameworks, ensuring authentication, authorization, and monitoring across systems. Access is restricted by functional role to minimize excessive privileges and conflicts. The standard also emphasizes data protection through classification, encryption, and safeguards against unauthorized access. MSPs are held accountable for AI-enabled services throughout their lifecycle, requiring documented controls for access, changes, logging, and data protection. These updates aim to raise the bar for MSP governance across five domains: Expertise, Trust, Security, Resilience, and Transparency, with 10 objectives and 72 requirements. As cybercriminals increasingly target MSPs due to their access to multiple client environments, these enhanced certifications are becoming essential for demonstrating implemented controls and maintaining competitiveness in a complex IT landscape.
