Trump reached an agreement with Putin, amid dissatisfaction even within his own party: "The EU paid Russia 250 billion dollars for energy"
The American President Donald Trump claims he made the "correct decision for the American people" when he reached an agreement with his counterpart, Vladimir Putin, regarding the sale of Russian gasoline.
Friday, following a discussion with the Russian president, the Republican leader of the US announced that he agreed that Russia could immediately sell 300,000 tons of gasoline on the American and global markets, with the aim of lowering prices for American farmers.
Trump's announcement caused dissatisfaction even in the Republican Party.
The American leader defended the agreement on Monday in a post where he does not explicitly mention it.
"The European Union paid Russia 250 billion dollars for energy, and Fake News Media does not want to approach this subject. We made the correct decision for the American people – America First!", wrote Donald Trump on Monday, on Truth Social.
The appeal made by several American senators
A group of Republican and Democratic senators asked Trump to reconsider the decision regarding the agreement with Russia, which they believe violates a 2022 prohibition on Russian energy imports.
"President Trump's decision to allow gasoline imports from Russia into the US directly contravenes the respective laws," the senators stated in the statement published on Sunday.
"Furthermore, the administration did not consult Congress nor did it present any explanation to justify its decision, as the law provides," the senators said, according to Politico.
Republican Senator Jerry Moran stated that Trump's decision undermines the sanctions imposed on Russia in the context of the war.
"We should impose even more sanctions, not undermine them by allowing the import of Russian gasoline and risking the nullification of our leverage, affecting our credibility in front of allies, and encouraging our adversaries," Jerry Moran stated in a post on social media.
