Portugal’s parliament backs Corgo Line reopening PORTUGAL: The national parliament has backed a resolution recommending that the government reopen the metre gauge Corgo Line northeast of Porto, on which services have been suspended for more than a decade. The initiative stems from a public petition launched in 2024, which was submitted to parliament the following year. Although the parliamentary resolution approved on July 17 does not have the force of law, it provides political and institutional backing for the revival of the line. The 96 km Corgo Line opened in phases between 1906 and 1921. The single-track line, which is not electrified, connected Chaves with Régua on the broad gauge Douro line via Vila Real. The 70 km section between Vila Real and Chaves was closed in January 1990. Services on the remaining 26 km between Vila Real and Régua were suspended in 2009 because of the poor condition of the infrastructure. Repair works began at an estimated cost of €23.4m, with completion envisaged for 2011. However, a national financial crisis resulted in budget cuts and the rehabilitation work was suspended in 2010. A strategic transport plan published in 2012 envisaged the formal closure of several regional routes, including the Corgo Line. However a national railway plan approved by parliament in 2025 included the possibility of reopening the line between Vila Real and Régua, recognising not only its role in providing local public transport but also its potential as a significant tourist asset.
