UK company starts work on Envision Venus voyager
Engineers in the UK are helping develop a European Space Agency-led mission to uncover how Venus evolved into a hostile greenhouse world, assess whether it ever had conditions suitable for life, and shed light on the formation of Earth-like planets.
In collaboration with Envision prime contractor Thales Alenia Space, the UK subsidiary of OHB Space is responsible for assembling and integrating the spacecraft, as well as the test campaign to qualify it for operations. Following the signing of a Preliminary Authorisation to Proceed (PATP) agreement, OHB Space UK will now initiate its Envision project activities.
Expected to launch in 2031, Envision will conduct a comprehensive investigation of Venus, combining radar, spectrometers, and radio science, to simultaneously sound its atmosphere, surface, and interior. These insights will reveal how Venus evolved so differently from Earth into an inhospitable greenhouse planet, while determining whether it ever possessed an environment that could have supported life.
The PATP signature took place this week at an event hosted by OHB Space UK at its Bristol site to mark one year since the subsidiary’s formation.
Established with an initial team of around 14 employees, OHB Space UK plans to expand its workforce to more than 100 highly skilled engineers over the next five years. In parallel, the UK subsidiary is constructing an advanced clean room facility at the new Aztec West site in Bristol to accommodate future activities, including satellite testing, technology development, and expansion of system level capabilities.
The anniversary celebrations in Bristol took place in the presence of representatives from ESA, the UK government, and industry.
During the celebrations, Marco Fuchs, Chief Executive of OHB SE, said, “Space is booming – and we are growing with it. With OHB Space UK, we are consistently pursuing our growth strategy and sustainably strengthening Europe’s space capabilities. I am very proud of the highly committed team in England and grateful for the close and trusted cooperation with our partners in the United Kingdom, Germany and across Europe.”
UK Space Minister Liz Lloyd said, “OHB Space UK’s first year is a real success story for British space. In just twelve months, they have gone from a small team to a company with serious ambitions – up to 100 highly skilled jobs planned in Bristol and a world-class cleanroom facility taking shape.
“Signing this contract for a major role in ESA’s Envision mission to Venus is a clear signal that OHB Space UK has already established itself as a trusted partner for world-class missions. This is exactly the kind of high-value investment that will drive the continued growth of our UK space sector.”
Carole Mundell, Director of Science at ESA, said, “OHB has firmly established itself as a valued and trusted partner for ESA Science, and I am truly delighted to see the establishment of OHB UK, which further strengthens and showcases the UK’s industrial capabilities. With the strong and complementary support of Thales Alenia Space, I am fully confident that OHB UK will rise to the exciting challenge of integrating and testing the Envision spacecraft and to deliver outstanding results.”
