Mapping the Interests of Russia’s Security Service The Second Service of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), officially the “Service for the Protection of the Constitutional System and the Fight Against Terrorism,” is responsible for protecting the Kremlin from internal political threats, extremism, and anything seen as a danger to the regime, which includes dissent or opposition to the war. (Calls for peace, proposals to withdraw troops from Ukraine, and stories about Russian war crimes are considered terrorism and extremism.) The largest category of articles was related to sabotage and terrorism in Russia, and the arrests of Ukrainian and Western “spies.” The second-largest category related to terror attacks, international wars, and domestic protests, with environmental protests emerging as a major concern. Food Industry Regulation Lawsuits A cross-border investigation led by Lighthouse Reports found that while global food and beverage giants publicly backed laws for ingredient transparency and junk food advertisement limits, they were quietly using the courts to try and force governments to water down those same policies. Reporters built a dataset tracking legal challenges to nutrition laws across Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, the US, UK, and India from 2010 to 2025, uncovering 239 lawsuits targeting measures like front-of-pack labelling, soda taxes, and advertisement restrictions on junk food aimed at children. Cases were counted when a public health regulation itself was being challenged, except for India. Their tactics, the investigation found, have “cost countries billions of dollars in both legal and healthcare costs.” Heatwaves Killed More People in Europe Than Guns in America Heatwaves now kill more people in Europe each summer than gun violence does in the US. Swiss French-language daily Le Temps followed up on a comparison made popular by Our World in Data’s Hannah Ritchie to find an estimated 56,000 annual heat deaths across the EU and Switzerland between 2022 – 2024, versus roughly 47,000 US gun deaths. Turning to Switzerland – which saw 326 deaths attributed to heat in 2024 – the team used maps and bar charts to find Geneva has Switzerland’s highest cooling demand, driven by its low-lying, heat-trapping geography, with daily average temperatures above 20°C (68°F) now the norm from mid-June to late August. While air conditioning prevented nearly 200,000 premature deaths worldwide in 2019, according to Lancet Countdown, the piece emphasized a regulatory point of contention where efficient fixed AC units require permits in most Swiss cantons, while inefficient mobile ones are freely sold. Without further adaptation, the analysis warned, Europe’s heat toll will keep rising as warming and an aging population compound the risk. How the UK’s Ruling Labour Party Lost Core Supporters The UK has a new prime minister — Andy Burnham — who replaces Keir Starmer after several of his former allies turned against him. Demographic changes are driving both rising healthcare costs and a “silver economy” boom, with elderly spending projected to hit US$64 billion within a decade. Using illustrations, waffle charts, line graphs, and lollipop plots, reporters mapped the city’s fastest-aging districts, projected the over-65 population through 2046, and compared retirement ages against other countries, alongside poverty rates before and after policy interventions. Rising Drug Deaths in Berlin Tagesspiegel found that drug-related deaths in Berlin are rising, with 300 casualties in 2025, according to government health data. Using a series of area, line, and bar charts, and a dumbbell chart, reporters analyzed police statistics dating back to 2018, comparing Berlin to Germany’s other largest cities. While the national average was 2.6 drug deaths per 100,000 residents in 2025, Berlin’s rate was 8.1. The problem spans the entire city, with every Berlin district recording more drug-related deaths over the past two years than before the pandemic. The rise is especially stark among young people — 11 minors died of overdoses in 2025 alone — while deaths among 18-to-25-year-olds also continued climbing. Police data showed drugs were detected in almost half of the deceased and in all cases at least one other substance was found in addition to the drugs. The US-Iran War’s Impact on Fertilizer As the US war with Iran drags into its sixth month, Reuters Graphics dug into the conflict’s impact on the world’s fertilizer supply, and with it, global food production. The war has cut off 17% of the world’s natural gas supply, more than 30% of nitrogen fertilizer exports, and nearly half the world’s exported sulfur, a key ingredient in another major fertilizer type. How Much Energy Do Data Centers Use? Regional breakdowns showed data centers already drew about 5% of US electricity and 2% in Europe, with local hotspots far higher, with more than 20% in Ireland and over a quarter of demand in the US state of Virginia. Portugal’s Oldest Trees Using an illustrated scrolling horizontal timeline, Público traced the life of the Olive Tree of Mouchao — believed to be Portugal’s oldest at roughly 3,350 years old — back to a point in history that predates the first Olympic Games in 776 BC.
