Ousmane Sonko offers his condolences to the family of Mody Niang

In Senegal, the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, leading an important delegation from the Pastef party of which he is the leader, traveled this Sunday to pay his condolences to the family of the deceased chronicler and inspector of education, Mody Niang. The leader of the parliamentary majority was accompanied by his vice-president, El Malick Ndiaye, the mayor of Dakar, Abass Fall, and the former ministers Moustapha Ngom, Khady Diène Gaye, Yacine Fall, and Marie Rose Khady Faye. For reference, Mody Niang, the dean, died on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the age of 81. Mody Niang (1945–2026) was an emblematic figure of moral integrity and civic watchfulness in Senegal. His disappearance deeply touched the Senegalese political and media scene. First inspector of the national education in the exceptional class, this intellectual from Koki dedicated his life to the transmission of knowledge before becoming a prolific chronicler and essayist, feared for his uncompromising analyses of the governance of successive regimes. A former spokesperson for the National Office for the Fight against Corruption (OFNAC), appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the daily Le Soleil by the new regime in 2024, he left a mark on minds by resigning from this prestigious position in 2025, citing declining health. However, some political analysts believed that this resignation was motivated by his desire to be "free of his opinions." "Our late friend Mody Niang, your life was so full of meaning, so dense with virtuous struggles, commitments, and ethical teachings, that your passing leaves us with a shared feeling: the regret of no longer being able to count on your wise advice and suggestions, and the conviction that you will now be better where you are, enveloped in divine pardon and mercy," wrote Ousmane Sonko, promising that the deceased's "fierce fight" for "transparency and virtuous and rigorous management will be continued."
