Andreas Almgren before the World Championship in the Half Marathon: "It will be so awesome"
Andreas Almgren is making an interesting start in the World Championship half marathon in Copenhagen on Sunday.
The running star has a clear goal in the competition.
β I will run to try to get a gold, he says to DR.
Almgren chose to forgo 5,000 meters in last weekend's Ultimate Championship in Budapest where he was invited. And missed the chance for big prize money. The winner received 1.4 million kronor.
Then the European Championship gold in the 10,000 meters in Birmingham after the much-publicized solo run five weeks earlier has focused on road running.
β It will be so awesome after I focused so hard on the European Championships. I wanted to do something completely different to feel motivated again. This will be the first stop in an interesting autumn, says Almgren at a press conference where World Athletics president Sebastian Coe participated.
To DR, Almgren says that he is aiming to win the World Championship gold.
β I feel that I am in better shape now than last autumn when I set the European record.
Regarding the European record β 58:41 β the Swedish running star set it in Valencia at the end of October last year.
Flying to the USA to prepare for the New York Marathon
After the race on Copenhagen's flat streets, Almgren will fly to the USA to prepare for the marathon in New York on November 1st. Almgren has already planned this for the next season.
β I will prioritize track running next year with the World Championships and perhaps do one or two road races in the autumn afterwards, says Almgren.
It will be a grand running festival in Copenhagen on the weekend where there will be three official world championships in road running: a mile, 5 kilometers (with Jakob Ingebrigtsen) and the half marathon.
The organizers expect the different races to attract 65,000 participants.
SVT will broadcast the race starting Sunday at 09:05.
