The Splinter Report: September 18th

Welcome to The Splinter Report, where I gather the assorted interesting and amusing things I’ve seen in the woodworking world. This week we’re looking at a sad table, a good reminder, and getting rid of your table saw. Tool News Quick Bites Makita Releases New Drill: I’m a big fan of the drills that have multiple heads that can be swapped out for different functions. If I have to drill a bunch of holes and then drive screws, I’ll grab two attachments and go to town, no having to swap bits and tighten a chuck, just a quick switch and I’m good to go. Makita is finally joining that party (in Europe and Asia at least) with this new 18v model. Here’s hoping it makes it stateside. Local Oddity: Sadness I was at Goodwill this week, and a table caught my eye. Sometimes an object being notable is a good thing, but in this case, it was the opposite. It was the most spindly-looking table I had ever seen, with little stick legs that lacked any sort of additional bracing. Of course I had to inspect it more closely, and it was even worse than what I had anticipated. The legs were affixed to a paper board top that lacked any sort of structural strength before it had water damage. The entire thing would wobble precariously if you even poked it, and I frankly have no idea how it even made it to the store without falling apart from simply being handled. The only application this table would be suitable for would be a breakaway prop table in a movie, that the hero could throw the villain through during a climactic battle. Or maybe that a comedic actor could fall through after jumping off of a stair landing. They wanted $4.99 for it, which feels about $4 overpriced to me. Out of Context Christopher Schwarz Quote Video of the Week: He’s Right You Know I have previously compared 731 Woodworks to dessert, as his stuff is insubstantial, but certainly enjoyable in moderation. This week though, I think he’s spot on with his table saw take. Most woodworkers don’t actually need a table saw, and newbies especially would benefit by avoiding it altogether. I have yet to pull the trigger on getting rid of mine, but its time in my shop is almost certainly limited.
