Prices in the inn rose more than inflation
Prices in guesthouses rose more than inflation
The Statistics Austria was right with the quick estimate for September. The final result for the most recent inflation figure is 3.6 percent. In August, the consumer price index was at 3.2 percent. The increase is mainly due to higher fuel and heating oil prices. But the service sector is also a significant driver of inflation. In gastronomy, prices were 4.4 percent higher than in September 2025. In the hotel industry, services increased by 3.7 percent. Food, on the other hand, was only slightly more expensive by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year.
Electricity became cheaper
Prices for transport increased by 10 percent, mainly due to fuel prices that were 34.8 percent more expensive compared to the previous year. Prices for household energy increased by 4.4 percent, with heating oil becoming significantly more expensive (plus 63.1 percent). Gas also became more expensive than in August (plus 11.8 percent), as did district heating (plus 5.1 percent). Electricity, however, became cheaper (minus 9.1 percent), with the Statistics Austria stating that the reductions in some network fees effective from January had a dampening effect on prices. In addition, the introduction of the social tariff for households exempt from the ORF fee and the introduction of the summer network tariff were also price-dampening.
Without fuels and heating oil, inflation was only at 2.4 percent. With a share of more than two percentage points, services represent the basic burden of inflation. Energy prices are the surcharge, says IHS economist Sebastian Koch. The average inflation rate across Europe is even higher than in Austria at 3.8 percent. In August, the inflation rate was 3.2 percent and in July 2.9 percent. Thus, the price increase is getting stronger above the target of two percent that the European Central Bank (ECB) aims for in the medium term. Recently, the central bank raised the key interest rates to 2.50 percent in September due to the increased inflation.
