New research quantifies what millions of people are already experiencing. Around 70% of Americans now regularly encounter buffering, with nearly one in five facing it every day. This is now mainstream broadband life, and it is only getting worse. Built for another era The broadband industry has spent years framing connectivity challenges as a speed problem. Build faster networks, sell bigger packages, advertise higher gigabit numbers. On paper, yes, the infrastructure has never looked stronger. Investment is up, coverage continues to expand, and multi-gigabit plans are increasingly available across much of the country. But the true experience of American households is moving in the opposite direction. Performance is growing less predictable, not more. The obsession with headline speeds has obscured the fact that networks built around rigid, monolithic architectures are simply not designed to handle modern internet usage. The real bottleneck is the inability of legacy network designs to manage simultaneous, competing, latency-sensitive demand at scale. Who is feeling it most? Buffering concentrates where broadband demand is most complex: in larger households, dense suburban areas, and environments where multiple people are running high-bandwidth applications at the same time. Nearly one in three internet users in these environments experiences buffering at least once a week. In some segments, daily disruptions exceed 20%. In dense suburban areas, around one in five households now experiences buffering daily. This was once almost exclusively associated with rural connectivity. The suburban congestion crisis is no longer tomorrow’s problem – it’s today’s. The data also reveals a trust problem that should alarm operators. Only 37% of consumers say they completely trust their broadband provider to deliver a reliable connection. That means nearly two-thirds of customers, even those paying for premium plans, have some level of doubt about whether their connection will hold up when they need it. Reliability, not speed, is now the battleground for customer loyalty. The pressure is building More than one in four households expects their internet usage to grow over the next two years, whether that be from more connected devices, richer applications, higher video resolution, more remote work, or more cloud-based services. Networks built on vertically integrated, proprietary hardware confront a major problem when it comes to scaling: you can’t flex one part of the system without touching everything. A network that is forever playing catch-up. And the gap between what consumers expect and what operators can realistically deliver keeps widening. For consumers, that gap shows up as a frozen screen or a dropped call. For operators, it shows up in trust scores, churn rates, and a customer base that is quickly losing faith in the service they are paying for. Disaggregation can’t wait Network disaggregation, which separates the hardware and software layers of a broadband network and allows them to scale independently, offers operators a different way to respond to this challenge. Rather than replacing entire systems to address a localized problem, disaggregated architectures allow operators to gain more control and scale services where and when they’re needed. This means you can respond to demand spikes in real time, target investment more precisely, and upgrade or adapt individual components without overhauling the entire network. It’s the difference between a network that reacts to demand and one that anticipates it. The commercial case is just as compelling. Operators that modernize their architecture are better positioned to roll out new services faster, manage costs more efficiently, and compete in the area consumers now value most: reliability. Open, disaggregated architectures give operators real choice in how they build and evolve their networks. That means no vendor lock-in, more competitive procurement, and the flexibility to adapt as technology and demand both continue to shift. For operators facing the twin pressures of rising demand and squeezed margins, disaggregation is not a long-term aspiration. It’s an operational necessity. The cost of waiting Some operators will read the survey data and see a performance problem to be managed. More accurately, it’s a structural warning. Consumers already feel the limits of how today’s networks were designed. Repeated performance failures don’t just irritate and frustrate customers. They become permanently linked with the provider delivering them. This drives turnover, reduces uptake of new services and wears away at the brand trust that you’ve spent years to build. Operators that continue to rely on legacy architectures are accepting that today’s performance limitations will compound as demand grows. Every year that they delay modernization is another year that customer frustration accumulates, erodes trust and cedes ground to providers that have already made the transition. And that transition is already underway. Operators that have moved to modern, open architectures are pulling ahead, not just on performance but on their ability to innovate, reduce costs, and respond to market demands in ways that legacy networks simply cannot match. The broadband crisis facing American households is an architecture crisis. The data is too clear and consumer patience too thin for operators to treat it as anything else.
