Presenter Christiane Amanpour leaves CNN after 43 years
CNN presenter Christiane Amanpour is leaving the station after 43 years. In a farewell message, she says she will stop her program Amanpour next May, and from the beginning of next year, the daily broadcasts will be scaled back to once a week.
Amanpour (68) started in 1983 as an assistant at the news station when it was only three years old. Although she initially heard from her boss that she was not cut out to be a correspondent, she grew to become one of the most recognizable faces of CNN.
She rose from reporter to international correspondent. Over the years, she was broadcast to various international conflicts, such as the civil war in Bosnia, the genocide in Rwanda, and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine. She herself said that her mixed British-Iranian heritage gave her the unique opportunity to explain diverse perspectives well.
Without giving a reason
Amanpour remains silent about the reason why she is taking a step back now. "After many months of reflection and many sleepless nights, I have decided to say goodbye to CNN, my partner in 43 fantastic years," she writes in a farewell message. "I will always keep wishing for CNN and its independent journalism. Remember: always the truth, never neutral."
The departure comes at a time when CNN is getting a new owner, the media conglomerate Skydance. Its subsidiary Paramount recently received permission to take over Warner Bros. As a result, the station CBS comes under the same umbrella.
