Record support for Trump
Record low support for Trump
Support for Donald Trump has fallen to the lowest level ever. Only 31 percent of voters think he is doing a good job as president.
The support in the new poll Ipsos has done for Reuters is 1 percentage point lower than two weeks ago.
When asked which party they would vote for if there were an election to Congress today, 47 percent say their vote would go to the Democrats. 35 percent stand behind Trump's party, the Republicans. The Democratic lead of 12 percentage points is the largest in the current election period, Reuters writes.
Two weeks until the midterm elections
The lead could increase the Democrats' hope of taking control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections held two weeks from now. All members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the senators are up for election.
Trump himself is not up for election this time, but many are looking to the midterm elections as a kind of referendum on his presidency. He has also urged voters to vote as if his name were on the ballot.
If the Republicans lose the majority in the two chambers, it may be more difficult for the president to implement the policies he wants in the two years he has left in office.
Expensive fuel creates dissatisfaction
Trump's popularity has fallen after he initiated the war with Iran with Israel almost eight months ago. The war and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz have also affected Americans in their pockets, in the form of more expensive gasoline and diesel. Even before the war, the president struggled to cope with high prices and the cost of living. Around 68 percent are dissatisfied with his handling of the economy.
The Ipsos poll, which ended on Monday, collected responses from 1279 registered voters. The margins of error are 3 percentage points.
