Visakhapatnam Port to get 3.584km elevated corridor

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved a ₹334.89-crore ($3.50) internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, aimed at improving cargo evacuation and reducing traffic congestion within the port premises. The project was approved by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, following appraisal by the Delegated Investment Board, chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The proposed 3.584km elevated corridor will connect Convent Junction with the Dock Area, separating road and rail traffic within the port. It is designed to address delays at nine major railway level crossings, which currently see around 18 gate closures a day due to high train exchange volumes. Those closures have been contributing to congestion, longer vehicle waiting times, higher fuel consumption and increased vehicle operating costs, all weighing on cargo evacuation efficiency. The elevated corridor is intended to enable smoother vehicle and cargo movement while reducing conflicts between road and rail traffic. The scope includes associated civil and electrical works, utility shifting, safety installations and five years of maintenance. Construction will be phased to minimise disruption to ongoing port operations, particularly in critical dock areas, with completion scheduled within 30 months of commencement. We are committed to building modern, seamless and globally competitive port infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed India’s maritime sector into a key driver of economic growth, self-reliance and national development. With stronger infrastructure, progressive reforms, modern technology and greater investment in our maritime capabilities, we are building a globally competitive and self-reliant maritime ecosystem that will power India’s journey towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat and a Viksit Bharat 2047.” The investment sits within the government’s broader push for integrated infrastructure planning under the PM GatiShakti framework. By improving last-mile connectivity and enabling faster cargo evacuation, the corridor is expected to strengthen Visakhapatnam Port’s position within India’s maritime logistics and trade network.
