Threatened press freedom Trump wants to ban CNN, "Politico", and MS Now from the White House US President Donald Trump wants to ban CNN, MS Now (formerly MSNBC), and "Politico" from leaving the White House due to the reporting he deems unfavorable. Trump announced this in a statement on his Truth Social platform. He also threatened that further such bans would follow for the media. Trump wrote on his social media page that he banished the media "with immediate effect from the White House because they constantly report fake news." The statement follows Trump's decision in February 2025 to keep journalists from the Associated Press (AP) news agency away from the Oval Office, "Air Force One," and other events that are too small for a full press corps. This was a retaliatory measure for the news agency's decision not to follow Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." An AP lawsuit is currently pending. Trump has long reacted with irritation to reporting that he finds unfavorable. He repeatedly attacks news organizations and individual reporters personally or via social media. In addition, he has demanded that broadcasters discontinue unpopular news or comedy formats in which he or his government is criticized or mocked. The US communications authority FCC was called by Trump to revoke licenses from stations due to critical reports. Furthermore, since returning to office, Trump has initiated legal action against the "New York Times," the "Wall Street Journal," the BBC, and other media outlets.
