The Amarok is already sold just across the border in Mexico. Volkswagen built its footprint in the United States market with scrappy little economy cars and gradually shouldered its way into seeming a cut above mainstream fare. However, in recent years, the company has been publicly struggling financially, and it still only holds a small share of the market on this side of the Atlantic. What sells well here? Pickup trucks. Should VW try that? The company has already talked about developing a truck for the U.S. market, one set to be built at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In Brazil and Mexico, Volkswagen trucks aren't positioned as offering a fancier experience as opposed to something like a Toyota Tacoma. They are working trucks, and sales include fleet use. Volkswagen has a long history of building vehicles in both countries, so there would be plenty of customers familiar with the long-running “Vocho” Beetle taxicabs of Mexico City. In the U.S., though, a VW truck might be a bit of a harder sell. Doubtless, Volkswagen would move a few buyers of its crossovers who want a little more utility for the weekend, but a U.S.-spec Amarok might have trouble making a dent in the fleet market.
