22 killed, 133 Indians missing after flash flood sweeps Nepal’s Rasuwa region; Bihar, UP border areas on alert

At least 133 Indians are among nearly 400 people reported missing after devastating flash floods swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday. At least 22 deaths have been confirmed so far. The floods washed away homes, vehicles, bridges and infrastructure projects and also prompted authorities in Bihar, which borders Nepal, to issue an alert as floodwaters continued to flow downstream. Officials said the surge entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side at around 9 am, severely affecting the areas of Timure and Syapru Besi. A mudslide also struck Tibet near the Gyirong border crossing, leaving several people dead or missing, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. Security camera footage from the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border showed people fleeing moments before a massive torrent of rocks, mud and water swept through the area, destroying buildings and vehicles and killing several people. The exact cause of the mudslide remains unclear. However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred approximately seven minutes before the timestamp shown on the security footage. Videos circulating on social media showed rivers surging violently through the affected areas, with one clip capturing floodwaters sweeping away a bridge. Another video showed a house collapsing suddenly, while people could be heard screaming and fleeing in panic in the background. The sudden flood caused major damage in several settlements in Rasuwa district, including Syaphrubesi, Timure, Betrawati, Mailung, Salletar, Shantibazar, Pairebesi, Khalti Basti, Sole, Trishuli and Battar. Syaphrubesi market and Timure are among the worst-affected areas, with several buildings and other infrastructure damaged by the sudden rise in water, according to the Kathmandu Post. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of deaths, injuries or the extent of property damage. Nepal Prime Minister chaired a high level meeting in the wake of the flash floods. Meanwhile Chinese President Xi Jinping has also ordered all-out efforts to search for and rescue people missing after a mudslide in Nepal caused casualties at the Gyirong border port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, reported Xinhua News. However, nine Armed Police Force personnel stationed in Timure, near the Nepal-China border, have been reported missing. The flood also damaged police buildings and posts in Timure, Syaphrubesi and Rasuwagadhi, according to the Nepalese daily newspaper. The Nepal government has started large-scale rescue and relief operations. Two Nepal Army helicopters have been sent to the affected areas, while the Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed. Medical teams and ambulances are also being sent to the affected areas. The Red Cross and Scouts have been asked to help with relief work, while Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called an emergency meeting to review the situation. Meanwhile, the floodwater has moved from the Bhotekoshi into the Trishuli River. Authorities said the water had reached Galchhi in Dhading by Wednesday afternoon and could reach Muglin within hours. People living near the Trishuli River have been advised to move to safer and higher ground. There are also concerns that the flooding could affect the Prithvi Highway and Muglin-Narayanghat road. The exact cause of the flood is still not known. Officials said there was no heavy rainfall in Rasuwa at the time, although significant rain was reported on the Tibetan side of the border. There is speculation that the flood could have been caused by a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), but this has not been officially confirmed.
