Horror’s Most Controversial Cult Classic Is Officially Getting a “PG

Before The Blair Witch Project convinced audiences that three missing filmmakers had left tapes behind, and decades before Paranormal Activity, REC, and the modern flood of screen-mediated horror, one Italian exploitation film had already discovered how frightening supposedly authentic footage could be. It’s now getting a 4K restoration in three different versions. And not just that, the 4K version has been getting live screenings all over North America and Canada, and only 10 remain for the rest of 2026. The upcoming combo pack of Ruggero Deodato's cult shocker — starring Robert Kerman, Francesca Ciardi, Perry Pirkanen, Luca Barbareschi, and Paolo Paoloni — has a plethora of different specs. Firs off, the pack contains six discs (one 4K Blu-ray/four Blu-rays/one CD). The 4K version contains restoration of the original 35mm and 16mm camera negatives and a DolbyVision/HDR representation of the film. And that’s only the beginning. The film’s title is Cannibal Holocaust (1980) and its 4K restoration combo pack is now available for pre-orders (since August 18). The actual deliveries and market availability, however, are scheduled for late October. Among the three different versions, there’s an uncensored theatrical version, a new special edition, and a never-before-released PG-rated version. There are two feature-length commentary tracks, a feature-length documentary by Calum Waddell, in-depth interviews with the creative team, extensive stills galleries and theatrical trailers, and so much more. The Version Touring Theaters Is the New Uncensored 4K Special Edition It’s important to note that the current theatrical run is Grindhouse Releasing’s new uncensored 4K Special Edition, and not the upcoming “PG-rated” alternate cut that’s in the combo pack. It restores the film from the original 35mm and 16mm camera negatives and, crucially, presents Alan Yates’ Green Inferno footage directly from the 16mm negative in its native 1.37:1 ratio, creating deliberate aspect-ratio shifts that Grindhouse owner Bob Murawski says make the film feel even more unsettling. Grindhouse has had a very widespread screening campaign throughout 2026, and while the remaining screenings include other titles, Cannibal Holocaust’s remaining 10 screenings through 2026 conclude on October 23. The remaining regions are Huntington, Houston, Toronto, Albuquerque, St. Louis, Boston, Ottawa, Seattle, plus a week-long New Orleans run. Not to forget, a Sitges Film Festival 2026 screening is also separately confirmed, although it has not been pinned down yet. The festival runs from October 8 to October 18, 2026, and the film is confirmed to screen during this window.
