The two companies said that the vehicles of choice will be Lucid’s new mid-size crossovers, which will likely be fitted with Nvidia’s Hyperion hardware and software suite. The Tesla Model Y competitor will be capable of SAE Level 4 autonomous driving, which means there’s no need for a driver behind the wheel. It also means that the responsibility falls on the carmaker or fleet manager if something goes wrong. The Lucid Cosmos mid-size crossover will likely be used for robotaxi operations in Europe. Lucid and Bolt said they will work together to develop the finished product, with the partnership being led by Bolt Autonomous Driving Solutions, the ride-hailing company’s dedicated autonomous-driving unit. The European firm will define the vehicle requirements and build the fleet infrastructure, operating systems, and city partnerships needed to deploy robotaxis at scale. Meanwhile, the newly established Lucid Technologies will handle the implementation of Lucid’s advanced driver assistance systems and digital features. “Autonomous driving in Europe requires data, software, vehicles, and operations to work as one system built for European roads and regulation,” said Markus Villig, Founder and CEO of Bolt. “Lucid brings a world-class platform, and together, we will co-design the vehicle and software based on our data and more than a decade of operating experience across more than 850 cities. No one is better placed to operate autonomous mobility services efficiently at scale.” It’s a big goal, and one that depends on European countries’ willingness to approve robotaxi operations on their territories. So far, just two companies have deployed driverless taxis in Europe, but only one of them has received approval to ditch safety monitors.
