TerraBlaster Raises $12.5 Million to Increase Farm Yields Through Optimized Soil Nutrients

TerraBlaster, a leading precision ag startup, today announced a $12.5 million seed round led by Ulu Ventures, bringing total capital raised to $16.5 million. Khosla Ventures, Trailhead Capital and Builders Vision also participated, along with Ag Startup Engine, Artesian, Reservoir and Sunna. Ulu Ventures partner Steve Reale joins the TerraBlaster board. TerraBlaster also announced the launch of its early-access program. This fall the company is running demonstrations with growers and retailers across the Midwest with learnings feeding into the systems delivered in spring 2027. Commitments for the company's first systems are already in place ahead of a pre-sale that opens this fall. “With our technology, there’s no reason to suffer suboptimal yields by applying nutrients to a field based on low-resolution or old measurements,” says Jorge Heraud, co-founder and CEO of TerraBlaster. “We are quickly moving to a future where real-time measurements enable precise soil fertilization, all in one pass.” The economics depend on many variables including field type and crop, but benefits include cost reductions and yield increases that can reach $45/acre. A typical example includes reduced soil lab and labor costs (combined $10/acre), and increased yield of about $35/acre (with $5 corn and $12 soybeans). Within the most deficient areas, yield gains can reach 20%. Fertilizer is the single largest input expense on most row-crop operations, and it is typically applied based on averages over large areas informed by spot soil sampling. This often leads to areas of the field with too much fertilizer and other areas without enough. TerraBlaster measures a wide range of field nutrients in real time at a resolution matched to today’s precision application technology. The result is a field where every part receives exactly what it needs. “TerraBlaster’s experienced team is bringing precision measurement to a massive market where better data means more productive, more sustainable harvests,” says Steve Reale, general partner and CFO at Ulu Ventures. “It's the kind of team-meets-market fit that Ulu loves to back.” TerraBlaster's Blaster 1000 is a towed unit that opens a shallow trench and measures soil fertility as it moves, roughly twenty times per second, producing nutrient concentration maps at a resolution of 0.15 acres. That’s an area of about 80 feet by 80 feet, which matches the working width of the application equipment already in the field. TerraBlaster can easily offer about 16x higher resolution than the typical grid analysis of 2.5 acres, and provides the results within seconds instead of having to wait days. It also reports each nutrient in six one-inch layers plus the standard zero to six inch composite. The new capital supports continued research and development and the launch of commercial operations in 2027. Expanding from the Midwest across North America, the initial market focus is row-crop growers and the retailers and agronomists who support them. TerraBlaster employs 10 people between Menlo Park and Iowa. TerraBlaster uses Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a technology spearheaded by Dr. Pablo Sobron to analyze Martian soil for NASA. Dr. Sobron is on the TerraBlaster’s board. Heraud previously co-founded Blue River Technology, which brought computer vision to precision agriculture and was acquired by John Deere in 2017. Dr. Matt Colgan, TerraBlaster’s CTO, was one of Blue River’s early employees.
