Hillary and Bill Clinton’s Home: Here’s Where the Former First Couple Lives Now

Where is Hillary and Bill Clinton’s home these days? Since Bill completed his term as the 42nd POTUS in 2001, the political power couple has primarily resided in a Dutch Colonial dwelling in New York’s Westchester County, secluded amongst the trees—and away from prying eyes. Of course, the former president and first lady still keep a foot on the ground in Washington, DC, in the form of a pad Hillary picked up when she won her seat in the New York Senate in 2000. Read on for the rundown on the rest of the Clintons’ properties over the years. First marital home In the summer of 1975, Bill paid $17,200 for a one-bedroom home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. A few months later, on October 11, he and Hillary were married in the living room of the Tudor revival–style dwelling, dating to 1931, and it became their first shared home. The following year, the Clintons moved to Little Rock, where Bill took office as the state’s attorney general. The couple rented out the home until 1983, when they sold it for $47,500. The 1,800-square-foot house is now the Clinton House Museum, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Brick bungalow When they moved to Little Rock, Bill and Hillary lived in a 1,394-square-foot abode with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The Clintons reportedly paid $35,000 for the 1930-built brick house in 1977. The following year, Bill was elected governor of Arkansas at only 32 years old—the youngest governor since 1938. Antique Little Rock abode After Bill lost his reelection campaign for governor in 1980, the Clintons paid $112,000 for a home in Little Rock’s Hillcrest neighborhood. The two-story, wood-frame home was built in 1905 and spanned 2,500 square feet, with three bedrooms and four bathrooms. Among the house’s charming features were a wraparound porch, a custom library, and an attic converted into a bedroom for their daughter, Chelsea, who turned one year old during the Clinton family’s two-year residency at the house. Arkansas governor’s mansion Bill was again made Arkansas governor in 1982, and the Clintons moved back into the state governor’s mansion, where they stayed until 1992, when Bill won the US presidential election. The Colonial Revival–style Little Rock residence, completed in 1950, features grand colonnaded walkways connecting the home to a guesthouse and an office, 8.5 landscaped acres, including a vegetable garden and a rose garden, and—nowadays—a prominent bust of Bill displayed near its entrance. Inside, the three-story mansion has a state dining room lined with an antique Persian carpet, a foyer crowned by an 18th-century French chandelier, and a formal living room with an Irish grandfather clock dating to 1770. The White House Hillary and Bill moved from the governor’s mansion to the White House in 1993, when Bill was inaugurated as the 42nd president. The First Family’s private quarters within 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue consist of 17 rooms on the second and third floors of the executive residence, in the middle of the building. During Clinton’s presidency, he and Hillary made some changes to their living quarters: a butler’s pantry was converted into a family kitchen, the Treaty Room’s private study was appointed with inlaid walnut bookcases, and a burgundy-and-gold color scheme was introduced. Also of note: A sitting area on the White House’s third floor was converted to a music room for Bill’s saxophone practice. Westchester County home In 1999, the Clintons bought a Dutch Colonial home in Chappaqua, New York, for $1.7 million. It was the same year that the president’s impeachment scandal came to a conclusion, when the Senate acquitted him of perjury and obstruction of justice charges. The five-bedroom Westchester County home, the first that the Clintons owned after 16 years living in government residences, provided a base for Hillary amidst her bid for the New York Senate. “We’re very pleased about the house,” Bill said at the time. “It’s beautiful. We like it a lot.” The Clintons still own the 11-room dwelling, which has served as their primary residence since Bill’s second term as president ended in 2001. In 2016, the former president and first lady added to their New York estate with the $1.16 million purchase of a neighboring ranch-style home. Spanning 3,600 square feet, the three-bedroom home sits on 1.5 acres, with a swimming pool, stone walls, and mature trees. When the Clintons bought it, the 1979-built house featured an open floor plan, with pecan wood floors, a modern kitchen with high-end appliances, and a dining area warmed by a fireplace. They still maintain this residence, which perhaps serves as a guesthouse or staff quarters. Washington, DC, base “When I was elected to the Senate in 2000, I knew that I needed a place to live while we were in session during the year. So I began looking,” Hillary told AD during a 2019 tour of Whitehaven, the Georgian-style home that ended her Washington, DC, house hunt. “I had an experience in this house, which was just emotional. I had gone up to the third floor and looked out over the trees—to the back of the British embassy—and I just felt like I was in old-time London or New York. The gardens were just the most amazing that I had seen anywhere in my real-estate tour.” In 2000, the Clintons paid $2.85 million for the 5,500-square-foot home. The four-bedroom, seven-bathroom dwelling is unlike the couple’s other residences in that this one is considered Hillary’s property. “It is totally, entirely hers,” a source said in a 2015 interview with The Hill. The 1950s residence is reportedly where the former first lady wrote much of her memoir, Hard Choices, and it served as a headquarters of sorts during the early days of her 2016 presidential campaign. Hillary tapped interior designer Rosemarie Howe, architect Donald Lococo, and landscape gardener Lila Fendrick to renovate the property between 2003 and 2006. The interior walls were painted the former secretary of state’s favorite hue: butter yellow. More light and access to the home’s back garden and its sparkling swimming pool were added throughout the home. And, most dramatically, a conservatory extension was added to the back of the house, providing a sunny space for Hillary to lounge or hold meetings. The Clintons still keep this dwelling as their home in DC. Presidential library residence Bill and Hillary still have a place to rest their heads in Little Rock. Completed in 2004, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum has a private apartment on its upper level. Overlooking the Arkansas River, the majority of the 5,000-square-foot suite is occupied by a modern, all-glass oval office and a conference room, with 2,000 square feet dedicated to private quarters.
