Danish PM to Trump: 'Greenland has been very clear, it does not want to be part of the US'

Upon his arrival in Turkey for the NATO summit, US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday, July 7, that Greenland "should be controlled by the United States," and accused Denmark of not investing in this autonomous territory belonging to the Danish Crown. Present in Ankara, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen refused to enter into the controversy and called for "respect" for her country's territorial integrity in an interview with Le Monde. In Ankara, Trump once again stated that the US should control Greenland. How do you respond to this? I think the position of the Kingdom of Denmark is quite well known, and I will say that the position of the US president is also very well known. Greenland is not for sale, and the people have been very clear: They do not want to be a part of the United States. They have the right to self-determination and we will respect that. And I ask everybody else to show the same respect. As Danish prime minister, I am asking everybody to respect that we are a sovereign state and everybody needs to respect our territorial integrity.
