Zelenskyy previously announced that he planned a meeting with Trump in New York. In the statement, Zelenskyy thanked Trump for the recent visit of his representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Kyiv. "I thanked the President for the visit of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv. We thoroughly reviewed the key issues, and they personally saw the situation in Ukraine. The peace process is our top priority," he wrote. Witkoff and Kushner visited Kyiv on September 6, after spending three hours talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day. It was their first visit to the Ukrainian capital in the capacity of Trump's peace representatives. During their talks in Kyiv, they stated that the American administration is trying again to restart negotiations to end the war. Zelenskyy stated that there are proposals for steps to reduce tensions and to resolve fundamental security issues. "There are ideas for steps towards de-escalation and for resolving fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human lives. We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps," he said.
