The Government: Roblox, Tiktok and Snapchat to have a 16-year age limit
The government wants that also online games and messaging services that can be harmful to children should be able to have the same age limit as social media.
In a press release, the government states that it is amending and targeting the proposal for a 16-year age limit on social media. Some games are also covered.
– There are some game platforms today that are somewhat disguised as a game, but which actually are full of features such as algorithm control and illegal marketing to children, which is why we want this to be included as well, says Minister of Children and Families Lene Vågslid (Labour Party) to NRK.
Roblox and Snapchat
The government believes that among others Tiktok, Snapchat and Roblox will be covered by the bill as the platforms are designed today.
– Children's safety must come first. The Labour Party government's work on a law for an age limit for the use of social media is almost finished, and we are making the law more precise to protect children and young people. At the same time, we safeguard their right to participate, says Vågslid in a press release.
Harmful social media are defined by the government as platforms that through their design, features, or content involve a risk to children's emotional, cognitive, or health development or safety.
YouTube can also get a 16-year limit, according to Vågslid.
Age verification
The age limit will be valid until January 1st of the year one turns 16. It is up to the companies themselves to ensure that age verification works and safeguards privacy.
According to Vågslid, it will still be possible for young people under 16 to communicate with each other digitally even after the bill comes into force. However, she will not say which digital platforms will be legal.
The government aims to present the bill to the Storting (Parliament) by the end of the year and the law is planned to come into force during the next year.
