China rejects the arrest warrant against Raúl Castro and criticizes "the abuse of judicial means to pressure Cuba"
"Raúl Castro is a very respected leader of the Cuban Revolution," said the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Government of China criticized this Wednesday the arrest warrant issued by a U.S. judge against the former Cuban president Raúl Castro and reiterated its rejection of "the abuse of judicial means to pressure Cuba."
"Raúl Castro is a very respected leader of the Cuban Revolution," said the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, who added that the leader "has great international prestige," according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
"China has consistently opposed the abuse of judicial means to pressure Cuba," she pointed out, before stressing that Beijing "firmly supports" the island in "the protection of its national sovereignty and the rejection of foreign interference."
In this regard, Mao demanded that the United States "end its blockade of Cuba and any other form of coercion or pressure," as well as "stop violating the rights of the Cuban people to survival and development."
The arrest warrant was issued on Monday for his alleged responsibility for the 1996 shooting down in international waters of two aircraft belonging to the Cuban exiles organization Brothers for Rescue, an incident that resulted in the deaths of three Americans and a resident of the North American country.
Brothers for Rescue was an organization based in Miami that carried out humanitarian flights through the Florida Strait to search for endangered Cuban migrants. It was founded in May 1991 by José Basulto, a Cuban exile and opponent who was on an airplane that escaped the incident, recognized by Fidel Castro, who alleged that the aircraft violated Cuban airspace.
