Hottinger Brüel & Kjær has provided structural monitoring technology for the construction of the underground Korsvägen station on the Västlänken project in Gӧteborg. This combines optic fibre sensing, multi-parameter instrumentation and automated data acquisition to monitor load transfer between highly stressed bedrock and newly-installed reinforced concrete support structures. COWI has designed a fully automated system for turning the data into actionable intelligence accounting for temperature effects, shrinkage and creep. Union Pacific has received the first rails from Rocky Mountain Steel’s new $1.2bn long rail mill in Pueblo, Colorado. In April the companies agreed a seven-year contract for the domestic production of steel rails, with UP to buy the majority of its rail from the Colorado-based steelmaker. Swiss engineering company Wyss & Lila has opened a rolling stock maintenance and lifecycle services workshop within the Industriepark Lausitz at Schwarzheide near Berlin. The site was selected for its infrastructure, connectivity, and position in an established industrial ecosystem near major rail corridors and industrial partners. It has three maintenance tracks with six servicing positions for locomotives, a 3 500 m² maintenance hall, 1 000 m of sidings and an 8 tonne gantry crane. Vossloh reports that orders developed ‘very positively’ in H1 2026, reaching a new high of €828.5m. The order backlog also rose by 31.8% year-on-year, reaching a new record high of €1.141bn as of June 30 2026. ‘Even though we cannot completely decouple ourselves from the challenging geopolitical and macroeconomic conditions and certain headwinds cannot be avoided in the current year, we believe Vossloh is very well positioned to continue benefiting from structurally attractive market opportunities in the years ahead’, said CEO Oliver Schuster. The Talgo board has appointed Ricardo Chocarro Melgosa as CEO. He joined the board in February as part of the arrival of the new shareholders from a Basque consortium led by Jose Antonio Jainaga. Chocarro is an industrial engineer with nearly 30 years of experience in sectors including aeronautics and renewable energies. In 2017 he was appointed CEO of the onshore business of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, and in 2019 joined Aernnova Aerospace as Chief Operating Officer, becoming CEO in 2020. The latest organisations to join the UK Rail Safety & Standards Board’s global affiliate network are UAE railway developer Etihad Rail, Toronto region transport agency Metrolinx, South Africa’s Railway Safety Regulator and Ireland’s Railway Accident Investigation Unit.
