Sascha Deri, founder and CEO of bluShift Aerospace, could make aerospace a little safer and little less costly. He also may satisfy demand for highly sought-after rocket systems.
bluShift is developing a rocket propulsion system and fuel that use non-toxic, bio-derived materials. “It's sort of this interesting fit of ‘What is the mission? What is the need of the customers?’” he told Design News in the above interview. “And looking at it from a business perspective, you look at what type of propulsion would do that at the lowest cost? And that's really how I came to the hybrid rocket.
“You see this now more and more frequently, less in the US, but more in other countries,” he added. “In the United States, we're one of just a handful of companies doing hybrid rocket engines. And we're the only one doing it with a bio-derived fuel.”
bluShift is building the propulsion system for its own rockets as well as for other rocket manufacturers to purchase. Deri said he saw an opportunity “to sell our engines to replace solid rocket motors, which are in incredibly short supply. They were in incredibly short supply three, four, five years ago. . . . It turns out to be an exceptionally good time in history for us to come to market with a different capability that can replace solid rocket motors in all the different cases.”
