Mexico denounces the death of a Mexican in an ICE center in Texas, 18 in this Trump government
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Sunday night the death of another Mexican migrant under the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, with which, according to the Mexican government, 18 Mexicans have died in these centers or in U.S. immigration operations during the second administration of Donald Trump.
The foreign ministry said that the unidentified Mexican man died in the Rio Grande processing center in Laredo, Texas, and that the consulate in that city was notified of the death by the local office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).
Mexico demanded that U.S. authorities conduct "a prompt, exhaustive, and transparent investigation" to clarify this death and announced that it will send a complaint to the Webb County prosecutor's office, where Laredo is located, to seek clarification of this case, which will join similar measures filed in the prosecutors' offices of several states in July.
"The Mexican government expresses its deep concern regarding the recurrence of deaths of Mexican people under custody or in the context of immigration operations in the United States... a situation that demands an effective response from U.S. authorities," the statement indicated.
The foreign ministry again asked U.S. immigration authorities to guarantee the access of Mexican consuls to immigration detention centers to guarantee the basic rights of Mexican people, such as health services.
Mexico's complaints were formalized after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo died after being shot by an ICE agent in Houston.
Since the beginning of Trump's second term, 15 migrants under ICE custody and three in operations by that agency have died.
