John Deere launches AI assistant for farmers
John Deere is adding an artificial intelligence assistant to its Operations Center platform, giving farmers a new way to sort through years of field and equipment data without digging through individual dashboards and reports.
The company announced JD, an AI assistant built into John Deere Operations Center, this morning. The tool allows farmers to ask questions about information already collected from their operations and receive answers based on that data.
In practical terms, Deere says a producer could ask JD how fuel use during tillage compares with the previous three years, how planter singulation varied between fields, which sprayer operator covered the most acres per hour, or when historical trends suggest harvest should begin.
The idea is to make the increasingly large amounts of data collected by modern farm equipment easier to actually use.
“Farmers have more data available to them than ever before, but the value comes from their ability to use it in the moments that matter,” said Jahmy Hindman, chief technology officer at John Deere. “JD changes the experience from navigating through a sea of data to simply asking it a question. It puts advanced data analysis within reach by enabling farmers to receive answers tailored to their farm and their needs in a matter of seconds.”
John Deere Operations Center has been available for more than a decade and serves as a centralized platform for field, machine and operational information. JD essentially adds a conversational layer over that information, allowing users to query their records rather than manually search through them.
The introduction comes as artificial intelligence is finding its way into more corners of agriculture, from machine automation and crop scouting to decision-support tools. It also raises a familiar issue for farmers adopting connected equipment: Who controls the growing volume of information generated on the farm?
Alongside JD, Deere is highlighting what it calls its Farmer Data Commitment, a set of 10 principles outlining how the company says it will handle farmers’ information.
Among those commitments, Deere says farmers control their farm data and can decide which third parties receive it. The company also says it does not sell farmers’ farm data or use it for agricultural commodity trading or speculation. Farmers can stop the flow of their information to third parties, according to the policy.
Deere says it may use farm data, as well as aggregated and anonymized information, to improve machine performance and provide decision-making insights.
“Farmers receive value from their data when they can use it to make better decisions, and we believe that value should come with control, transparency, and choice,” said Deanna Kovar, president of Worldwide Ag & Turf Division: Production and Precision Ag, Americas and Australia at John Deere. “Our view is simple: farmers should control their data, clearly understand how it is used, and benefit from the insights it can create. JD and the Farmer Data Commitment are part of the same vision for helping farmers put their data to work on their terms.”
Farm data ownership and privacy have been points of discussion as agricultural equipment and software collect increasingly detailed information about yields, inputs, equipment performance and farm operations. Adding generative AI to that equation makes transparency about how information is accessed and used particularly relevant.
For now, most farmers won’t immediately have access to JD. John Deere is opening a limited Early Access Program to select U.S. agricultural customers. The company says it plans to make the assistant more broadly available later this year through Operations Center on the web and mobile devices, followed eventually by access through in-cab displays.
Deere also plans to expand similar AI capabilities beyond agriculture, with future applications aimed at turf, construction, roadbuilding and forestry customers.
The company is demonstrating JD during the 2026 Farm Progress Show, held now through Sept. 3.
