Trump's officials "flee" from a failed administration, claims special counsel recently fired, Paolo Zampolli
Paolo Zampolli, the former friend of the American president, who was recently dismissed from the Department of State in his capacity as special envoy, warns about an "exodus" from the Administration. Zampolli stated that officials are "fleeing" the US administration ahead of the elections in the middle of the term, writes The Independent, quoting an interview he gave to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Paolo Zampolli, who is said to have first introduced the US president's future wife Melania to the president, was dismissed on Thursday from the Department of State after some emails leaked to the press revealed a dispute with Christopher Landau, the Deputy Secretary of State.
In an interview given to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica and published Saturday, Zampolli stated that, "at this moment, the government is changing, and many people are leaving the administration."
He added: "They are not just leaving, they are fleeing."
Trump's popularity ratings are at historic lows, and Republicans consider that they will lose control of Congress and, possibly, the Senate in the upcoming elections.
Zampolli's comments follow a series of large-scale departures from the administration recorded this week.
Katie Zacharia, Trump's press secretary, resigned after only five days in office, following a wave of questions about her competence and whether she had ever been a lawyer.
Following the news of her dismissal, Kristi Noem, the former Secretary of Homeland Security who was dismissed in March, announced that her term as special envoy had ended.
According to the leaked emails, Zampolli had surpassed his term as the US special representative for global partnerships—a largely ceremonial position—involving in various diplomatic matters.
He was accused of having traveled to Republika Srpska, a pro-Russian entity in the Balkans, at the beginning of this year, and of meeting with Giuseppe Conte, one of the leaders of the Five Star Movement in Italy, for discussions about a hotel business in Rome.
"Your mission at the Department of State is over," Trump told envoy Zampolli, according to the interview given by the latter to La Repubblica. "Why don't you get into business, since you are interested in that? At least you will make some money," Trump would have told him.
Zampolli maintained that his departure was something he had planned and let it be understood that other officials with unofficial roles might also be leaving.
"We were discussing this for some time," he said, adding: "Discussions are also taking place regarding others, such as Grenell, Boulos, even Kushner and Witkoff, all of whom hold unofficial positions," Zampolli said. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, and Steve Witkoff, unrelated to diplomacy, are Trump's special envoys for the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
When asked if he had any embarrassing details revealed about the Administration, Zampolli simply replied: "The information comes out on its own."
