The appointments took effect on Friday, just after Sonia Boyce was sworn in as the first woman to serve as Commissioner of Police. Boyce presented letters of appointment at Police Headquarters following the confirmation of Barry Hunte and Adrian Broomes as deputy commissioners of police, and Stephen Herbert, David Welch and John Boyce as assistant commissioners. Describing the occasion as “a joyous morning”, the commissioner noted that several of the officers had already been acting in their respective roles. Congratulating the new senior command team, she said: “The Barbados Police Service is not a one woman or one man show,” adding that the group must move forward together, “hand in hand,” to advance the organisation. She said the leadership team’s objective was to continue building the TBPS into an organisation that is not only among the best in the region, but among the best in the world.
