Trenitalia trials heat-mitigating window films on Frecciarossa fleet ITALY: Trenitalia has begun testing heat-mitigating window films on its Frecciarossa fleet in a trial aimed at improving energy efficiency and passenger comfort during the summer months. The work is being carried out at the Napoli Gianturco rolling stock maintenance depot, Trenitalia’s largest facility dedicated to high speed trains and the principal maintenance base for the southern portion of the Frecciarossa fleet. Servicing around 35 trainsets each day, the depot is well suited to fleet-wide retrofit programmes. The films are being applied to train windows during scheduled maintenance, avoiding the need to withdraw trainsets specifically for this modification. Designed to reduce solar heat gain inside the coaches, particularly when trains are standing in stations or exposed to prolonged sunlight, the films help to improve passenger comfort while reducing the load on the onboard air conditioning system. According to Trenitalia, the treated glazing repels 44% of incoming solar energy, compared with around 30% for untreated glazing. The trial reflects the growing need to mitigate the effects of increasingly frequent summer heatwaves in Italy, where prolonged periods of temperatures above 35° or 40°C place greater demands on trains’ climate control systems.
