"A huge deduction of points": the severe penalties Manchester City risks for breaching financial fair play
The Daily Mail published the sanction the club could receive, citing "sources familiar with the process" for violations of Premier League rules.
Manchester City could face a historic sanction in the Premier League. According to the Daily Mail, which cites "sources familiar with the process," the penalty that takes the most force for the club's non-compliance with the financial rules of the Premier League would be a deduction of points that would cause the club's relegation to the Championship, as well as a millionaire fine.
This sanction would be applied in the current season, although there is also the possibility that a reduction in units will be generated that will also affect the next season.
This situation could make it difficult for City to return immediately to the Premier League and keep the club in the second division of English football for another year.
"The information in the possession of sources familiar with the case indicates that the most probable sanction consists of the deduction of a large number of points, in order to ensure the relegation of Manchester City to the Premiership, along with a colossal fine," the publication assures.
"It is also possible that the sanction includes the deduction of more points, which would in practice lead to Manchester City remaining in the Premiership for at least one additional season. The Premiership will not be obliged to accept this sanction against one of its clubs, but it is likely to approve it," he adds.
A historic sanction
Some weeks ago, the Premier League delivered its verdict against Manchester City and found it guilty of a series of irregularities committed between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, exposing the Citizens to severe sanctions.
Richard Masters, the CEO of the Premier League, explained the decision. "The main decision establishes the facts of what happened in Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically infringed the rules of the Premier League for almost a decade," he stated.
"This also justifies the Premier League's decision to proceed with this case against Manchester City. Although the process to date has been long and difficult, the League has remained firm in its determination that the facts be established independently," he established.
The charges are categorical. "Manchester City entered into 'fictitious' contracts (which misrepresented the real agreement between the parties) with several of its business partners, in addition to resorting to 'fictitious' agreements with others, to artificially inflate the club's income and reduce its costs," the first states.
The second is equally serious. "The club presented inaccurate accounts and concealed the real situation of its finances from its auditors and the football regulatory bodies," it states.
The third has international reach. "Manchester City significantly breached the spending limits of both the Premier League and UEFA," it points out.
"During the Premier League's investigation, Manchester City incurred multiple breaches of its obligations to cooperate and to act in good faith with the League (three of the four alleged infringements were confirmed)," the fourth states.
