EDF’s Hartlepool and Heysham 1 nuclear power plants’ lives extended to 2030

EDF has decided to extend the operating lives of its Hartlepool and Heysham 1 nuclear power plants by two years, with the plants now expected to continue generating electricity until 2030. The French company said the decision to extend the end of generation dates “was taken following a series of EDF executive and licensee board meetings on 22 July 2026.” The decisions are “independent” of UK regulators and government and are instead “taken by EDF’s licensee board following recommendations from EDF Nuclear Generation Limited’s Executive”, EDF said. While the dates are forecasts, the precise dates will depend on “the results of regular graphite inspections and how those results are interpreted” by EDF and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR)”, it added. EDF described the decision as “a boost to the UK’s energy security and to local employment”. The extension should support 1,000 jobs in total across the sites “for longer”, and provide 28TWh of electricity output over the duration of the extension period, enough for 8.4M homes, the company said. “When EDF acquired the fleet in 2009, all seven advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) stations were scheduled to be offline by 2023, but a series of life extensions mean four of those stations are still generating with three now in various stages of defueling or decommissioning,” EDF said. “Keeping these stations online will retain around 12% of the UK’s nuclear generation in the mix in 2028 and the volume of gas they could avoid in each year of the extension is equal to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes or 20% of the LNG imports in 2025. “The decision comes following a detailed review covering technical aspects like the condition of the boilers and the graphite cores as well as supply chain resilience and workforce planning. “EDF will continue to keep AGR lifetimes under review to establish whether further life extensions can be achieved.” EDF managing director of nuclear operations John Munro said: “We have been clear it is our ambition to generate from these stations for as long as it is safe and commercially viable to do, so it is great to be able to confirm a further two-year extension for Heysham 1 and Hartlepool.” Responding to the news, Nuclear Industry Association chief executive Tom Greatrex said: “The significance of this cannot be understated, given the UK’s exposure to volatile gas prices and the need to protect households by providing baseload power. Heysham 1 and Hartlepool will now continue to play a crucial part for longer. “Today’s announcement is also a reminder that, as our existing fleet approaches retirement, we must move at pace on new nuclear, taking the decisions needed now to deliver the next generation of reliable, secure, low-carbon electricity.” A 12-month extension was previously granted to the power stations in September 2025, which would have seen them stop generating electricity in 2027. Hartlepool started generating electricity in 1983 and was initially operated by the Central Electricity Generating Board. Since privatisation in 1990, the station has been owned by Nuclear Electric and British Energy, but is now owned and operated by EDF, according to the ONR’s website. It has been under significantly enhanced regulatory attention for safety since March 2026. In its 2026 annual report, regarding Hartlepool, the ONR said: “We have undertaken extensive work to support and oversee the station’s development of an improvement plan aligned to our areas of concern. “Their implementation has, however, been slowed by a protracted double reactor outage, which has led to a deteriorating position with reportable events, high and medium potential events, and other important indicators all worsening. “Accordingly, we have now placed the station into Significantly Enhanced (Regulatory Attention Level) RAL, with a range of regulatory actions placed on the dutyholder that will be actively monitored.” The ONR’s security attention level for Hartlepool is routine. Heysham 1 also started generating electricity in 1983, and is under routine levels of security and safety attention by the ONR. In April 2026, the UK Government said it had stepped in to provide government support to the Ensus bioethanol plant in Wilton, Teesside, which is critical for domestic CO2 supplies. AGRs require CO2 for cooling. Operations at Ensus had been suspended, but the Iran conflict had resulted in reduced imports of CO2 to the UK. Like what you've read?
