The HUR reported that the drone strike destroyed the MiG-29 and an airfield launching unit, which was reportedly servicing the combat aircraft at the time of the impact. The agency estimated the financial losses incurred by the Russian military from this incident to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
Broader campaign against Russian aviation in Crimea
The attack on the Belbek airfield aligns with an ongoing Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian aviation assets and military infrastructure on the occupied peninsula.
On Friday, July 3, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that its drones struck the Saky and Gvardiyske air bases. The SBU stated that seven hangars storing aviation equipment, including Su-30SM, Su-30, and Su-24 aircraft, were hit at the Saky facility. Preliminary data indicated at least seven aircraft were destroyed or damaged.

The agency also reported strikes on two hangars at the Gvardiyske airfield, which are utilized for storing Shahed attack drones and other aviation equipment. The SBU noted that both bases are regularly used by Russian tactical aviation to launch strikes against Ukrainian territory and support operations in the south.
These operations are part of a 40-day campaign authorized by President Volodymyr Zelensky, designed to systematically degrade Russian military potential and infrastructure. Earlier in the week, the SBU reported another drone strike on the Saky air base that resulted in a fire inside a hangar housing a Su-30SM fighter jet.
