Trump: agreement on expansion of US military presence in Greenland President Donald Trump says that he has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland on strengthening the US military presence in Greenland. Trump announced the agreement on his Truth Social platform. According to Trump, the agreement gives the United States "permanent control over security in Greenland". He speaks of an agreement with an indefinite term. "There is no end to it!", writes the president. He added that his government would "immediately" begin the process of developing a greater military presence on Danish territory thanks to the agreement. Approval The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has now confirmed that an agreement exists. The agreement must be signed during the upcoming General Assembly of the United Nations and then approved by the parliaments of Denmark and Greenland. According to Frederiksen, the agreement respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland. For months Trump had threatened to take the island by force, even though Denmark is a NATO ally of the United States. The president wanted to do this, in his own words, to ensure that the Danish island does not fall into the hands of Russia or China. Trump repeatedly emphasized that Greenland is of crucial importance to American security. Resources Experts think however that Trump has other motives. Greenland is rich in rare resources and has a strategic location. This year, thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark in solidarity with Greenland.
