Log in to your existing account or sign up today! The testimony of one of Christian music’s top artists about God’s guidance through unimaginable tragedy is coming to the big screen. The studio behind "Jesus Revolution" and the "I Can Only Imagine" films announced this week it will soon begin production on "My Jesus," which is described as an “emotional and heartfelt” movie chronicling Anne Wilson’s journey from tragedy to Christian music stardom — a journey that began with her breakout hit, the 2021 country-infused "My Jesus," written after her brother, Jacob, was killed in a car accident. Kingdom Story Company, the studio behind a string of faith-based hits, is making the film in partnership with Lionsgate. “My Jesus" has been such a special part of my story, but even more than that, it’s been a reminder of what God can do when we simply say yes to Him,” Wilson wrote on her Instagram account. “I’m so excited to share the story behind this song and journey with you in a whole new way.” Aliza Kate Barlow will portray Wilson. The film will also star Gavin Casalegno, Monica Potter, Charles Esten and Beau Bridges. Wilson said she inherited her love of country music from Jacob. “[My Jesus] was written after losing my brother,” Wilson told Crosswalk Headlines. “I remember journaling for the first time after he passed away. I would just write down every [day] that God got me through another day. And I wanted to prove to myself that I would survive this tragedy. So about two and a half years after that, I started going back through my journals, and I realized that I had never referred to God as any other name other than My Jesus.” "My Jesus" was her first big hit and won a GMA Dove Award (Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year) and a K-LOVE Fan Award (Breakout Single of the Year). “I wrote it with Matthew West and Jeff Pardo, and the song just came about. And from there on, God just kept opening doors,” Wilson said. Production is set to begin in October. The film is based on Wilson’s book "My Jesus: From Heartache to Hope." Kay Oyegun will direct it. Kingdom Story’s Joshua Walsh, Brandon Gregory, Andrew Erwin and Daryl LeFever will produce it, with West, Jim Miller and Robert Deaton serving as executive producers. A news release described the project as a “music-driven, coming of age film” that “follows the inspiring story of Anne, a regular teenager who is driven by a life-altering moment to post a video of herself singing online, triggering an avalanche of response and catches the attention of executives across the Christian and country music industries.” “But finding her voice means Anne must also navigate the impact her gift has on everyone around her, including the changes it brings to her family and friends and the weight of her own expectations,” the plot summary reads. “Along the way, she must redefine how she views herself, her place in the world, her relationship with God and ultimately, her purpose.” Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said the film is a “testament to the power of faith, family, friendship, love and devotion.” “Her journey isn't just evocative and emotional — it shows how trusting that faith changed her life in every way,” Westerman said. “Kay has a wonderful take on this touching story, and we're passionate about bringing it to life.” Kingdom Story Company's Brandon Gregory said the film will resonate with audiences. “My Jesus,” Gregory said, “is a story for a generation that loves the communal experience of going to the movies and is increasingly bold and unapologetic about their faith.” Photo Credit: ©CapitolChristianMusicGroup Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years.
