It is very close right now in the gubernatorial election in Ohio, USA. Vivek Ramaswamy, former Republican presidential candidate and now an enthusiastic Trump supporter, is up against Democrat Amy Acton. The latter is barely ahead, and only within the margin of error.
Now The Washington Post reveals that the Republican candidate Ramaswamy has spent four million dollars on a commercial film where his political opponent Acton's own mother β Donna Arthur β accuses her daughter of being a liar.
β My daughter has lied her whole life. She needs help, says the mother in the film that has spread most on social media.
The background is that Acton, who broke with her mother in 1978, has made public court documents and police investigations showing that she was raped by her stepfather during her upbringing. According to the mother, it is a lie.
Amy Acton's brother Philip Stearns sharply condemns the commercial film. He believes that it profits from a victim of sexual assault. He also points out that the mother remained married to the stepfather until his death.
Ramaswamy, who is a wealthy biotechnology entrepreneur, has spent at least 140 million dollars on advertising along with his allies according to the newspaper. That is three times more than Acton and her campaign have been able to spend.
Acton has been subjected to several personal attacks during the campaign. Ramaswamy has among other things made statements about her being an alcoholic and mentally unstable. In a previous commercial film, she was also accused of causing a woman's death. The woman died in a nursing home during the pandemic, when Acton was in charge of Ohio's health department.
Vice President JD Vance has also participated in the attacks against Acton. He called her "crazy" and said: "I promised Amy that I would meet her at a bar later. I understand that she likes that kind of thing. So I will try to get to know her a little better."
The Washington Post has tried, but has not succeeded in reaching, Acton's mother for a comment.
The USA will vote in the midterm elections on November 3.
