Elon Musk makes a promise for "every child" in the US: "Will be the first in a long series"
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated on Monday that he will provide each child in the United States with one share of the aerospace company he leads, reports CNBC.
According to a document filed in August with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Musk currently owns approximately 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, but the number could reach 6.4 billion if the options in his contract are taken into account.
Official data from the US Bureau of Statistics shows that as of July 1, 2025, there were 72 million children under the age of 18 in the United States.
This would mean that Musk would donate shares worth approximately $10.5 billion, taking into account the price of $146.03 at which they concluded the stock market session on Friday. Musk's net worth is currently estimated by the Bloomberg agency at approximately $904 billion.
"This will be the first in a long series [of donations]," Musk wrote in a message he distributed on the "X" network, without providing further details on how the distribution of the shares will take place.
Musk has donated over $350 million to Republican candidates.
CNBC notes that in recent weeks, Musk's financial donations have attracted public attention mainly due to his political contributions.
Since July, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla has donated approximately $366 million to Republican groups, thus becoming the largest donor to candidates for Congress in the US that will be held at the beginning of next month.
Musk, the wealthiest person in the world, has directed $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the Republican Party's main campaign group for the Senate elections.
He made the donation in September through an affiliated group in Texas, created to support Republican Ken Paxton. The race between him and Democrat James Talarico for a Senate seat is one of the most watched in this US electoral cycle.
Musk's two contributions, amounting to $75 million and $83 million respectively, are among the largest political donations ever made.
Musk's message regarding the donation of shares for every child in the US came shortly after the artificial intelligence company Anthropic disclosed that it intends to allocate 5% of its shares to a new fund for public benefit, with the participation increasing as the company's valuation grows after listing on the stock exchange.
"I recommend giving the shares directly to the public," Musk replied to a message published by Anthropic on X, adding that he also intends to do exactly this.
